#decodethatIL: Bite’s Agave Lip Mask! We’ve been hearing a lot of love for this product, so what’s the magic with this little guy? The star ingredient here is medical grade lanolin which is oils collected from sheeps wool. Lanolin has gotten a bad rap due to being animal derived (although it does just come from the wool and not the sheep itself) and its tendency to cause irritation. But, lanolin has a great profile of lipid components: cholesterol, fatty alcohols, and fatty acids. Even better, what makes lanolin “medical grade” is the number of times it’s been rinsed and processed, resulting in a highly purified ingredient that’s used in wound healing. So look for medical grade lanolin to try to incorporate this into your skincare routine and of course always patch test! #drawsheeplikeshefive #reallycalledlanolinlipmask #notthesamering #lanolinbehindthescenes

To be honest, we're not too impressed with beta-carotene in our skincare. Doing some digging, most of what we found were studies of beta carotene as a potential oral antioxidant supplement for preventing UV photodamage. The quick conclusion there is: Don't replace your sunscreen with a beta carotene supplement, it might help reduce sunburn potential (but still use sunscreen), smokers shouldn't take this supplement, and it could give a nice tan. But back to skincare, and again, we couldn't find much. We did find one small study that used ex vivo (surgically removed human abdominal skin – ouch!) and a in vivo (mouse model) to show that conversion of beta carotene to retinol in skin could be favorable. But no clinical studies to support. Additionally beta carotene is not a fun ingredient to work with because of its pigment. It's an extreme red, with stain potential, and you only need a tiny amount to color the formula in a not so pretty way👹👹. Also makes us skeptical about concentration used. Overall, we recommend not relying too much on this ingredient in your skincare and eat some veggies instead! 🍠🐰Any experiences or studies to add? #wedratherEat #carrotsandhummus #canpizzasaucsegivevitaminA #ingredients

Happy Friday everyone! Today we’re bringing in a new voice, Mr. Money Man Zain will be sharing his unique perspective here and there on his learnings and struggles with building his own skincare routine. Today it’s about body lotion and it turns out, not all body lotions are created equal. Like many men, Zain has never paid much attention to developing a proper skincare routine. His first experience with moisturizing was when his mom would make him use her greasy, old-school lotions. He’d get annoyed because his hands would feel slick and in his words, “couldn’t catch a football with that gunk on his hands”. 🏈 #butterfingers #priorities College Zain discovered Nivea 3-1 moisturizer and it’s been his go to ever since. It applies easily and isn’t the least greasy. Zain has experimented with other lotions like Aveeno and Jergens Shea Butter but both don’t absorb as easily as Nivea. In fact Aveeno doesn’t really absorb at all!!😱. We observed Zain rub at his arm for a solid minute, molding and restyling his arm hair. The final result was his arm hair turn into what looked like a used lint brush 😐😶. Funny thing is, it made us realize that these three actually have pretty comparable formulas. The standout difference is: Nivea has denatured alcohol…to help lighten and cut absorption time. Aveeno body lotion and Jergens also use petrolatum, a truly great occlusive that seals in moisture, but apparently doesn’t play too nicely with arm hair. Who knew! #hairysituation #maleperspective #zainskin #decodethatIL

Chemist Confessions benar-benar menunjukkan bukti ya, bukan janji.

Last week we asked if people are #teammineral or #teamorganic when it comes to sunscreen choices. So many responded that we did a quick tally for fun! Physical (aka mineral) sunscreens won out that round with 13 votes. 9 bat for both teams. and 8 chose chemical filters. Gloria has always liked chemical sunscreens better, and Victoria tends to skew mineral. But at the end of the day, it really just depends on the formula! This Australian Gold sunscreen formula that comes with shea butter, plays nicely with Gloria's dry skin, but can feel heavy on humid days. It also leaves a slight white cast afterwards. (but not quite the overly enthusiastic Geisha Cosplay level *cough @fiddysnails ) The product claims to be "antioxidant-rich", but the only AOX here is the kakadu plum sitting happily at the end of the ingredient list… so definitely wouldn't drop your favorite vitamin C serum for this. All in all, a good basic sunscreen at a great price point. *Warning! Not for those who don't enjoy smelling like a human pina colada! #sunscreenmatters #decodethatIL #summerskincare

Time for a very crude breakdown of nail polish 💅🏻🎨(because this is also not our expertise). Nail polish typically has 4 components: 1. Solvent: Usually what is responsible for that nail polish smell, either ethyl or butyl acetate. 2. Film Former: highly flammable nitrocellulose is typically used to leave a pretty film on the nail. Fun fact! This also was used to make gun cotton, old film, and coat playing cards. 3. Plasticizer: Gives longevity, strength, and flexibility to the film to be resilient towards things like washing our hands. 4. Stabilizer: Pigments can start shifting color with sun exposure over time because nitrocellulose is unstable under UV, so adding a stabilizer will help absorb some of the UV energy. Once again, makeup chemistry can be very challenging. For example, a thick coat can disperse pigment nicely but a thinner coat makes a nicer film. Then it's gotta hold up with all those solvents and plasticizers…oh and good luck keeping blues from shifting…gah!!! #makeupILchallenge #nailart #whoknewsoapandwatercouldbesotough Also second fun fact: Lately there are a lot of “phthalate free” claims being thrown out there lately. In actuality, most of the phthalate concern started from nail polish. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was a traditionally used as a plasticizer in nail polish. Although the FDA is still on the fence with phthalates, the EU has already placed a ban on using DBP.
